How long have you been making music?
My parents report that I’ve been singing and making up songs since I was a toddler. My first public performance was in a community theater production when I was six years old. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have found something I love at such an early age and to have had the opportunity to continue doing it all these years. If I’m lucky, I’ll never have to stop!
What made you start Princess Rap Battles?
I had a variety of comedy songs on my YouTube channel already, and I wanted the next one to be a rap about how I don’t know how to rap. I’d written a line about me being “white like snow, pale like ale, porcelain-skinned princess from a fairy tale” which led me to thinking what would happen if it were actually Snow White rapping instead. It all flowed from there.
What is your favourite Rap Battle you’ve filmed already?
We put so much time into each of these videos (hundreds of hours of research, writing, production, recording, editing, etc.) to make them as high-quality as possible that they’re each precious to me. I can’t choose a favorite child!
If you could work with any singer or band who would it be and why?
There are so many spectacular talents that inspire me. It’d be an honor to share the stage with Pink; Tenacious D (I did get to work with them once already, briefly!); Tim Minchin; Bo Burnham; Adele (I’d try to get her to show her funny side – she has a great sense of humor from what I’ve seen); Scott Bradlee and his Postmodern Jukebox; Todrick Hall; Lin-Manuel Miranda; The Lonely Island; Sutton Foster; and of course the king of ‘em all, Weird Al Yankovic.
Where do you see yourself in 2-5 years?
Considering that it was only 1.5 years ago I had the idea for the first rap battle and now they’re a series that’s had half a billion views worldwide… I certainly can’t predict the next leg of this crazy journey. But I’ll be very excited indeed if my future holds more acting, more music, more writing, more television, and more opportunities to do my best to make people laugh and think. In any and all mediums.
Do you have any social media accounts for fans to follow you?
Sure! All my big videos debut on http://youtube.com/whitneyavalon, but in between those I hang out at the following. Come say hi! 🙂
