TORONTO’S INDEPENDENT ARTIST JULIA CARLUCCI CHATS TO ME ABOUT HER LATEST SINGLE ‘TAKE ME DOWN’

What is your name?Julia Carlucci

What is your genre of music?

Pop/R&B/Soul

Give us a little bio about you.

My name is Julia Carlucci and I’m a Pop/Soul artist from Toronto, Canada. My sound is a mix of influences from classic R&B to contemporary Pop music. I recently released my first single called ‘Take Me Down’ as well as my first official music video.

Are you a signed?

No, currently an independent artist.

Your new single ‘Take Me Down’ can you tell us more about it.

‘Take Me Down’ is about falling for someone you know you shouldn’t. It’s when your head knows better but your heart is too curious to walk away.

Did you work on it with anyone if so who?

The song was written by myself and two Canadian writers named Cat Lewis and Sam Pomanti. It was produced by Cat Lewis and Canadian producer, Andrew Kesler.

What was the recording process like?

It was a long process but it was a lot of fun ! All of the sections were recorded separately and very spread out over the course of a year. The horns were recorded at Canterbury Studios in Toronto and then one of my producers, Andrew Kesler, recorded the rhythm section instruments himself.
Funny story about the vocals…my vocals that are on the recording are actually my demo vocals. I recorded them sitting down in my basement (which is not a studio whatsoever). I had no intention of keeping them and even did a whole other recording session to replace them. We ended up not liking the new vocals so we kept the demo ones.
How was the writing process for the song?

Long ! Haha. This song has been re-written so many times. When I first started it about three years ago, I re-wrote it several times because certain lyrics/melodies weren’t working. I stepped away from it for a year or so and then came back to it. I finally finished it with my producer (Cat Lewis) and he helped me find the right version of the song.

You also released a new music video to accompanie ‘Take Me Down’ what was filming like?

Filming the video was so much fun. It was a very long day but so worth it. That was the biggest undertaking of my career thus far as an independent artist so it was such a valuable learning experience as well.

You worked with Merik Wiiliams, how did that come about?

I’ve been working with Merik for 2-3 years now. We were both vocal majors in college but I had heard he did photography/videography as well. I hired him to film one of my studio sessions back in 2014 and we’ve been working together ever since !

Will we see a EP or Album anytime soon?

Not anytime soon. I’m focusing on pushing out singles and video content right now. Maybe in 2018.

Do you have any gigs or a tour coming up or in planning?

Currently in the process of booking shows but nothing concrete right now.

Do you play any instruments?

I play piano.

Who are your influences?

Adele, Beyonce, and Alicia Keys

How do you get inspiration to write songs?

It all comes from personal experience or events in the world that really affect me emotionally. I sometimes even write about someone else’s story if it inspires me.

I would love to be touring Europe or even Asia. Touring anywhere would be pretty cool.

What advice would you give to aspiring musicians not about the industry and just as an artist?

Stay consistent and work very hard. Realize that you have something unique to offer the world and have your art reflect YOU.

What quote or saying do you always stick by?

You can never cross the ocean if you’re afraid to lose sight of the shore.

You get off a plane in your hometown,

1/ where is the first place you visit – The only place I want to be when I get off a plane in my hometown is my bed !
2/ where is the first place you see –
3/ where is the first food place you go and what do you get – Chicken bowl from Chipotle
Where is one place in Canada you tell everyone to go to, if they’ve never been?

Well, I’m biased but there are so many awesome things to do in Toronto. The CN Tower is a must for anyone who hasn’t been here. From an unbiased perspective, I’ve heard Montreal and Banff are absolutely stunning. They’re both on my bucket list !

You work with Project Light Company, how did that come about?

About six months ago, Charlotte reached out to me on Facebook and said that she loved my music! She told me all about Project Light Agency over a Skype call and I was sold. Working with her has been such a great experience and I’m so happy to have her on my team.

My microphone, lipstick, water, set list, confidence !
